WELCOME... I live and work in Derby, the County town of Derbyshire, England - and in various ways I am involved in the wildlife and landscape of the County. I am Keeper of Natural History at Derby City Museum and a keen member of Derby Natural History Society.
My main achievement at Derby Museum has been the devising and participation in the construction of a Gallery portraying the geology, wildlife and landscapes of Derbyshire, the 'Derbyshire Nature Gallery'. The Geology Section, 'On the Rocks', opened in 1991, while the wildlife section, 'The Nature of Derbyshire', opened in May, 1998 and won a commendation in the 1998 Interpret Britain Awards. A section, on garden wildlife was completed early 2000 and a hands-on ‘discovery area’ was added in 2001.
As a member of Derby Natural History Society I have been the Editor of its annual journal 'Observations' for the past six years. I am an enthusiastic cyclist and get out into the Derbyshire Countryside - and beyond - as much as possible, armed with a camera and sketchbook.
I have a large collection of 35mm slides of landscapes, wildlife and architectural subjects. I’ve now gone digital, which has opened up new photographic possibilities. In my artwork I have concentrated on pastel-drawing, mainly landscapes.
I am a keen conservationist and try to practise what I preach, including the maintenance of a wildlife-friendly garden at my home at Allestree on the northern outskirts of Derby.
